In a nail-biter, M-E prevailed over Amesbury 3-2 in an away match, Thursday, May 27. Highlights included two three-set matches at number three singles and number two doubles.

At three singles, M-E sophomore Sophie Zalosh, playing in her first varsity match, took senior Kanthi Patel of Amesbury to three sets after dropping the first set 3-6. (Newburyport MA) The weather was perfect.

Manchester-Essex pitcher Kellen Heney was perfect…..through five innings.

But when the game ended, Newburyport was perfect (4-0) after defeating the Hornets, 7-0, on Saturday morning at Pettingell Field.

ME struggled in the field all game collecting miscues in five of the six innings.

(Amesbury MA) Girls soccer is being played in Massachusetts.

But the MIAA has taken the rivalries out of it.

Teams are happy just to be playing.

Thoughts of who the opponent is, and winning state titles have vanished.

Spectators are limited in number and visiting spectators are banned from the events.  It’s a paid vacation for the officials as a result!

The games feel like scrimmages to me.  But I digress……

“I thought we had them,” said Newburyport coach Shawn Bleau afterwards. “We were up 2-0 and playing well.”

(Lynn MA) Last time I saw the Manchester-Essex girls soccer team play Amesbury it was October and they scored early and often defeating the Indians, 3-0.

In the rematch today, the Indians won the Division 4 North title, 2-1, in double overtime at Manning Field.

Amesbury (15-3-4) moves on to the D4 state semi-finals on Wednesday against the South winner.

The difference-makers in today’s game?  Senior Chelsea Lynch and junior GK Alli Napoli.
